Mastering energy efficiency with Ecodesign

Ecodesign is an approach to product design that encourages manufacturers to consider the environmental impact of the product over its entire lifecycle.
In the European Union, the Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC establishes a framework for the setting of mandatory energy efficiency requirements for all energy-related products (ERPs)

Carrier, in line with the targets of the European climate and energy package for 2030

Regulation 1253/2014

Has been setting energy efficiency requirements since 2016 for ventilation units equipped with filters, energy recovery devices, fans and motors. The requirements were reinforced in January 2018.

Regulation 2015/1095

Has introduced energy efficiency requirements in July 2016 for industrial process cooling chillers with negative leaving temperatures and has been reinforced in July 2018.

Regulation 2016/2281

Sets energy efficiency requirements and informative requirements for chillers up to 2,000 kW used in air conditioning applications for comfort cooling, and for air conditioners, rooftops and packaged units in comfort cooling and space heating applications. It also sets energy efficiency requirements for industrial process cooling chillers up to 2,000 kW with a positive leaving water temperature. It came into force in January 2018 and has been reinforced in January 2021.

Under regulation 813/2013

Air- and water-to-water heat pumps with a Pdesign,h up to 400 kW must comply with higher energy efficiency requirements as from September 2017. Heat pumps with a Pdesign,h up to 70 kW must also carry Energy Labelling in line with regulation 811/2013 from September 2015 onwards.

The European F-Gas regulation

Reducing the carbon footprint with F-Gas regulation

The challenge raised by the European Union’s F-gas regulation means the entire industry must move to a new generation of refrigerants that will not only protect the ozone layer but also have a very low global warming impact. Carrier is facing this challenge head on.

Under the EU F‑Gas Regulation, refrigerant bans will apply to all commercial equipment. A GWP limit of 150 will apply to commercial heat pumps and monobloc air conditioners below 50 kW from 2027 and above 50 kW from 2030. In addition, a GWP limit of 750 will apply to chillers above 12 kW. For split air‑conditioners and VRF systems, the GWP limit will be set at 750 from 2029 and reduced to 150 from 2033.
